The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, abbreviated to USSR, SU or the Soviet Union, is a Socialist State located in Northern Eurasia. The USSR is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), with its seat of government in the capital city of Moscow.

Covering 22,402,400 square kilometres, the Soviet Union is the largest nation on Earth. Extending the entirety of Northern and Central Asia, as well as much of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union spans 10 time zones and and incorporates a wide range of environments and land forms.

Since the economic reforms in the late 1970's, the USSR has become one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. As of 2014, it is the world's second largest economy by both nominal total GDP and purchasing power parity (PPP), and is also the world's largest producers of oil and natural gas due to its extensive mineral and energy resources. It is one of the five recognized nuclear weapon states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. It also has the largest standing army and the highest defense budget. The Soviet Union is a superpower and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Economy[]

As of 2014, the Soviet Union has the world's second-largest economy in terms of nominal GDP, totalling at around US$10.247 trillion according to the international monetary. However, if Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) is taken into account (US$17.472 trillion in 2014), then the USSR has the largest economy in the world, surpassing the United States. In 2013, its PPP GDP per capita was US$37,458, while nominal GDP per capita was US$34,667.02. Both instances placed the Soviet Union behind around 25 countries.

Politics[]

Government[]

The General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union is the leader of the CPSU and the de facto head of state and commander-in-chief, as well as the highest position in the Soviet government. For the most part, the General Secretary postition is synonymous with Leader of the Soviet Union. The Premier of the Soviet Union is head of government. Both postitions are held by Vladimir Putin, who has consolidated power between 2003 and 2005 until he held ultimate power in the country.

KGB[]

The Committee for State Security (KGB) plays an important role in the nation. Though domestic security has gone down to historic lows, the KGB  is heavily involved in international affairs. Though the United States' CIA utilizes satellites as well as being regulated by a citizen's committee, the KGB remains under strict party control and emphasizes putting agents in the field, instilling fear in the hearts of many. A certain Saudi Arabian billionaire would think twice before associating a terrorist organization if he knew he could be whisked away in the middle of the night by the KGB.

Military[]

With around 2.4 million active personnel, the Soviet Army is the largest standing army on the planet.
